Aquaphor Side Effects
Although problems are unlikely to occur with the use of Aquaphor, side effects may occur if the ointment is accidentally taken by mouth. It is also possible to develop skin irritation or allergic reactions when using it. Although this is not a true side effect, it should be noted that Aquaphor will stain clothing and fabrics.
An Introduction to Aquaphor Side Effects
Aquaphor® Healing Ointment is unlikely to cause side effects. Even if problems do occur, they are usually treated easily by you or your child's healthcare provider.
(This article covers many, but not all, of the possible side effects with Aquaphor. Your healthcare provider can discuss a more complete list with you.)
Possible Side Effects of Aquaphor
Although highly unlikely, Aquaphor could potentially cause allergic reactions. Signs of such reactions might include:
- An unexplained rash or hives
- Severe itching
- Swelling of the mouth or throat
- Wheezing or difficulty breathing.
Aquaphor contains lanolin alcohol, a highly purified derivative of lanolin. While many people allergic to lanolin can safely use lanolin alcohol (and, therefore, Aquaphor), reactions are possible.
Serious side effects might be more likely to occur if Aquaphor is accidentally taken by mouth, which might occur with a young child or a pet. Taking any kind of ointment by mouth can cause pneumonia if the ointment is inhaled into the lungs.
Although this is not a true side effect, it should be noted that Aquaphor will stain clothing and fabrics. Treat these stains as you would any other grease stain.
You may experience some or none of the Aquaphor side effects listed in this article. Unfortunately, it can be difficult to tell if any particular side effect is caused by the ointment itself or other factors.
Therefore, make sure to let your healthcare provider know if you develop any side effects while taking Aquaphor or if something "just does not seem right." While it may not be related to the product, your healthcare provider will be able to diagnose and treat the problem.
